How To Style A Polo Shirt: Our Top Polo Outfits For Men

Every wardrobe needs a polo, or two. With their versatility and timeless charm, polo shirts will keep you on trend year after year, and help to make the most of what’s already in your wardrobe.

Polos have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with more styles than ever before to choose from. In this journal, we delve into our favourite polo outfits and our top tips for styling.

1. Chino Chic

Chinos are a year-round favourite thanks to their range of thicknesses and the options for shorts or full pants. Their tailored cut makes them ideal partners for polo shirts. Whether it’s the height of summer or a cool Autumn day, the chino-polo combination is ideal for dinner out with the family, drinks with friends or any other smart-casual occasion.

For an understated look, opt for neutral-toned chinos as these will work with any polo colour. Beige chinos and a navy polo are a true go-to or add some flair with a striped colour or pop of colour.

Layer your polo with a crew neck knitted jumper if it starts to get cold.

2. The Summer Classic: Polo & Shorts

The pairing of polo shirts and shorts is a timeless classic and the perfect place to start our polo outfits. It’s a low-fuss, stylish option for the beach, a weekend brunch and everything in between.

For a leisurely day in the sun, opt for a lightweight cotton polo with gentle-fitting linen or cotton shorts. Hybrid board shorts are a handy option if you’re likely to take a dip. Go for lighter colours to keep cooler in the heat, and pop the polo collar for extra protection for your neck.

3. The Long Sleeve

Long-sleeve polo shirts are ideal for the Autumn and Winter months, offering the comfort of a polo with a bit of extra warmth. They perfectly balance comfort and style, sitting between a button-down dress shirt and an informal rugby shirt. As such, they can be dressed up or down and will become a wardrobe favourite for wearing all day long

For a casual look, choose boot-cut jeans and sneakers, and layer over a cotton tee. If you’re dressing up, look for a tailored chino made from premium cotton, such as the Archie Deluxe, and a merino polo. Button up to the collar and finish with a blazer if you’re looking to impress.

4. The Button-Up

This season’s must-have polo is the button-up, which offers a retro-inspired twist and is a perfect alternative to conventional short-sleeved shirts. Usually crafted from lightweight knits, button-up polos are best layered over a muscle tee or tank for added style and comfort. Whether worn open for a casual look or closed for a more formal occasion, these polos adapt effortlessly.

From breezy linen shorts on the beach to tailored chinos for dinner out, button-up polos are hugely versatile. We particularly like textured button-ups, such as the Sorrento Knitted Polo, and the contrasting trim of the Gatsby Polo.
