Recreating Buddy Franklin’s Style
Regardless of where you’re from in Australia, or which AFL team you support, you will have heard of Lance “Buddy” Franklin. A stalwart of the Swans front line, and previously Hawthorn’s, he’s kicked over 1,000 goals in his career and is part of an elite (and very short) list of players to kick 100 goals in a season.
However, we’re not just interested in the man on the pitch. As Buddy has now officially retired from footy, we are taking a look at his style and what you can wear to dress like Buddy Franklin. A well-known icon on and off the pitch, Buddy even started his own clothing line. With his wife Jesinta being a fashion model in her own right, you know you’re in safe hands with Buddy’s outfits.
We’ve picked out three easy-to-wear Buddy looks for inspiration, each a classic look in its own right that you can wear time and time again. These can all be created using Academy Brand picks so you can impress the crowd and ace your outfit Buddy Franklin style.
Keeping it casual in athleisure
It will come as no surprise that athleisure is classic Buddy Franklin clothing, and we’re not just talking red & white Swans kit. Easy to pair, comfortable all day long, and ultra-fashionable - we love athleisure at Academy.
One of our favourite Buddy looks is perhaps one of the simplest: sweat shorts, a muscle tee, trainers and a baseball cap. This clothing combination is perfect for cruisey weekends or heading to the pub with friends, and it’s very easy to recreate from staple wardrobe pieces.
However, you don’t have to stick with Buddy’s colour combinations here. For our recreation we have gone with grey shorts, but have twinned these with a seasonal storm blue top. With grey bottoms, the colour options for your top half are extra flexible so play around to find your combination.

Holiday vibes
If you’re heading off on holiday, or want to channel those summer vibes, this combination is for you. On the top, choose a lightweight print shirt with short sleeves - go for muted colours to make it easier to pair but be bold with the pattern itself.
For the bottom half, Buddy has opted for green shorts and we agree that this is a winning pairing, particularly if your shorts are hybrid board shorts so that you effortlessly transition from the boat or beach to the bar.

Perfect For The Family Portrait
It’s hard to go wrong with a block-coloured collared shirt and pant combination, particularly when using neutral tones. An off-white shirt provides a slightly softer look than pure white, ideal for smart-casual dress codes.
This is a very classical outfit and one which can be put together with no fuss at all.
To make the most of your look, pick a slightly fitted shirt - this will lend itself well to being left untucked with an open collar. Finish your look with dark-coloured pants; a navy chino pant or ink-blue demin jeans are a handy option here.

While he’s best known for his goal-scoring prowess, we think Buddy has his fashion in check too. The best part about each of these outfits is that they’re made up of timeless classics which you may even have in your wardrobe already. If you don’t, now’s your chance!
